Using MailTags with OmniFocus
MailTags and OmniFocus work together to integrate a sophisticated mail task system with a general task management system.
To move MailTags messages to OmniFocus.
- Open OmniFocus system preferences.
- To get to the clipping menu, click on the Clippings scissor icon.
Enter a clipping shortcut key sequence. Caution: Make sure the clipping short cut key is not the same as your Mail Act-On shortcut keystrokes. We've also been advised by the good folks at OmniFocus that Snow Leopard is especially finicky about what key combos it will accept. Function keys are no longer assignable, and even the most obscure shortcuts in use by any part of the OS -whether or not it's in use by the application you're trying to clip from- will not be assignable.
The default setting of Mail with MailTags listed below Mail OS seems to result in Tags not transferring, so make sure to click and drag the Mail With MailTags selection so that it's on top. Make sure that the Mail With MailTags selection is active, i.e., check marked.
To set project and date tags
The quick entry option lets you set project and date tags via a pop up OmniFocus short cut window (activated by the clipping short cut key).
Setting or changing the tags at this step can be useful, but tends to be time consuming, as each message tag has to be individually applied.
A more time efficient strategy is to use MailTag rules to bulk set project and date tags to your Mail, and then use the clipping short cut to import these tagged messages. Just click through the short cut interface to put your tagged messages in the corresponding project folder in Omnifocus.

Note: The OmniFocus short cut interface will sort mail messages into a project folder. Date sorts become possible once the message gets to the OmniFocus folders.
