[MT] Does MailTags work with Gmail IMAP?

Gmail's implementation of IMAP is not the same as standard IMAP servers, and while MailTags works with Gmail IMAP, it does so in a limited way.

Saving Tags to the Gmail IMAP server

Gmail's implementation of IMAP is non standard and as a result, MailTags cannot save its data to the Gmail IMAP server as it can with other IMAP servers, such as Mobile Me. This means MailTag data will not be accessible to other devices which access the GMail account. Rather the MailTags data is stored locally on the computer.

MailTags and Gmail Labels

Gmail labels are internal attributes of a message and are represented in Mail as specific IMAP folders. However, this method of presenting labels in Mail is not interchangeable with tags from MailTags. Consequently the labels you set on the Gmail web client will not translate into MailTags data, and vice versa.

Will these issues be resolved?

These issues have been difficult to address because of the idiosyncratic, non-standard nature of Gmail IMAP. If anyone has any ideas on a fix then please give us a shout.

What about Mail Act-On and Mail Perspectives?

Mail Act-On and Mail Perspectives work fine with Gmail IMAP accounts.
