Mail will not fully start up -- PLEASE HELP

I'm running Mail 4.2 under OS 10.6.2, and using the latest version of MailTags for Snow Leopard, which was installed a few days ago when you released it.

It worked fine at first.

Today it started causing this problem -- it will not let Mail fully launch completely, and show the main browser window. The Mail menu bar appears, but no window, and Mail is hung and has to be force quit.

Troubleshooting this showed it is MailTags -- I removed Mail bundles one by one and it is definitely MailTags that's causing this.

I redownloaded the latest MailTags, ran the uninstaller, then installed. Did not help. Still get the same problems.

HELP -- what should I do to get my MailTags back??

Thanks,
David

    Hi David

    Thanks for the email.

Can you take a look at the application /Applications/utilities/Console.app

And see if there are any messages from Mail when you launch (with MT installed)

    Scott:

Below are all of the Console log entries for today (when the problem first started) that contain "MaiTags" -- As you'll see at the end of the list showing the most recent entries, the most common error reported is: "unsupported header criterion mailtags due date"

    Scott,

    Thanks again for your help.

Here's the situation, and a question for you.

    1. The Situation:

The problem seems to have resolved. Mail can launch now even with MailTags installed in the Bundle folder.

    2. My Question for You:

First some background -- I started having problems with my iMac this morning, including Mail not launching. To troubleshoot this, methodically removed the Mail plugins from the Bundles folder, and narrowed it down to MailTags. It was the culprit preventing Mail from launching.

I then ran Disk Utility, which reported the following problems:

I successfully repaired the disk with Disk Utility.

But the problem of Mail not launching when MailTags was installed remained.

I noticed the time was displaying funny in iClock in my menu bar. It wasn't "03/09/10" like it should be, but rather 3910 or something like that. I also noticed that in Mail, the times shown for receipt of messages in the main list were in military time (which I never use). I also noticed that Creation and Modification dates in the finder were also displaying oddly.

So I opened System Preferences. Went to the Formats tab in Language and Text Preferences. Best I can remember, I didn't change any settings, and the settings seemed correct.

Then, after I quit System Preferences, a miracle happened. Another different problem I was having today also got resolved -- My web bookmark application Webbla wouldn't open. No matter what I did, including complete uninstall and reinstall of it. But after I closed System Preferences, Webbla opened without any problem. And, now the date was displaying properly in iClock in the Finder menu bar, and also the modification and creation dates were also displaying correctly in the Finder.

So, since the log for MailTags said "unsupported header criterion mailtags due date", and the problem I was having seemed to have something to do with system-level handling of dates, I had a hunch that MailTags might work if I reinstalled it and put it back in the Bundles folder. So I tried it, and voila, Mail opened fine, and MailTags was there again in Mail.

Therefore, my question to you --

So, do you think I'm on the right track -- that this had something to do with system level handling of dates stuff that somehow had gotten messed up, was not fixed when I repaired the disk with Disk Utility, but got somehow set right again just from opening System Preferences and going to the Formats tab in Language and Text Preferences but making no changes and then closing it again?

What do you think? I'd like to get a fix on what caused this in the first place, now that things seem to be ok with MailTags.

I couldn't imagine using Mail without MailTags, its indispensable. I'm so glad it's back, but why oh Lord did this happen in the first place. Does my info above provide any clues about what you think happened?

Thanks for letting me know your thoughts on this.

    David

    Hi David

I am not certain how it happened -- the date format could be involved. As for the disk first Aid -- did you boot from another volume and repair -- if not this should be done. -- and if you don't already, you may want to consider a backup system (eg time machine)
